50th Eisa Festival -- "Ei ya sa sa!"

[CULTURE]
Coming up at Okinawa City Koza Sports Park 27-28 August is the island's largest annual eisa festival. Eisa is an Okinawan ceremonial drum dance performed during the O-bon festival for ancestral spirits that visit this world during this period. Heart-pounding drumbeats, ear-piercing whistles, joyous shouts of "ei ya sa sa," and colorful costumes make the event cheery rather than sad and gloomy.

For those who enjoy downing a cool brewsky on hot summer evenings, Orion beer -- the local favorite -- is served at discounted prices on location because Orion Beer Festival 2005 is held concurrently at the park.

Your faithful e-scribe was once given a quick eisa lesson by a friend who used to dance in one of the eisa troupes. It called for much dexterity and stamina. Alas, years being deskbound have turned the body of this supposed army reservist to... to... Jell-O? Sashimi? Soba?

Um, anyhow, from the event organizers:
